What About The Dog Business?

I am helping my good friend Perry Gamsby with his websites and saw this article he wrote from 2014.

The village where I am current staying is very pet friendly.  Dogs are allowed into the mall and shops as long as they have a Pet Pass.  This is checked by the security guards and actually is strictly enforced.  You never see a stray dog or a local type of dog around here (lots of exotic breeds).  There many businesses providing services for pets and they are not cheap.

Anyway back to the article by Perry which suggests there as an opportunity for more Dog Training businesses in the Philippines.

Anyone wants to know more about the Pet Pass can read about it here: http://megaworldlifestylemalls.com/main/news_blogs/blog/63

Its another public holiday in the Philippines - Today is for People Power

The Philippines has a lot of public holidays and this is something you need to be aware of when employing outsource workers or setting up an office in the Philippines.
Here is a list of countries with the most public holidays in the Asian region with the Philippines at number two:
India has the most number of public holidays, at around 21 days each year, even more depending on which state you live in. The Philippines has the second-most public holidays with 18, followed by China and Hong Kong (17), Thailand (16), Malaysia and Vietnam (15), Indonesia (14), Taiwan and South Korea (12), Singapore (11) and Australia and New Zealand (10).
In addition the national public holidays there are also many other holidays for specific provinces, cities and towns across the Philippines.

Do you own or operate a business in the Philippines?

There is a new group for expats that own and operate businesses in the Philippines. It has been created to enable you to network with other business owners, share information, experiences and for those that want to promote your business to the expat community.

Born Again Filipino Work Force

I know of a business operating here in the Philippines that now employs almost exclusively born again Christians.  I have talked to the owner of the business who is Christian, but not born again Christian, and he explained that in their experience they have found them to be the most reliable hard working and lest troublesome of all the employees.

I would need to ask specifically but I am pretty sure that the preference for employing born again Christians just evolved through personal referrals as more staff were needed.

They certainly do not exclusively employ born again Christians but it would be fair to say that they are more willing to consider a born again based on their past experience.

One common issue I believe that avoid is relationship problems.  The born again Christians tend not to get into the emotional dramas like many other young Filipinos. They also tend to be more reliable (also punctual) and work focussed. I have been to the office and its all heads down and work from what I observed.

I am not advocating this practice and while I would have no issue employing a born again Christian, I would not want to have a work force that are predominantly born again Christian.

Great opportunity to start a boat charter business

I see a huge opportunity to develop a boat charter business and I am current developing a website for it.
There is a huge demand for Island hopping, fishing and scuba diving but not enough boats. The Tune Time fishing boat was operating in Batangas but has just been brought down to Cebu to meet the demand.
Spoke to another charter owner who is sending two fishing boats to Siargao which holds annual fishing competitions that bring in participants from all around the world (the other thing Siargao island is famous for is surfing).
If anyone is look for a business opportunity in an almost untouched area I recommend creating a party boat. A friend of mine operates one in Phuket Thailand and its a great idea. Cebu is ready for something like this.
There is also an opportunity to setup a restaurant cruise boat.
One of the best things about this investment is you can own it and easily relocate it (even outside the Philippines) if you want to.
Anyone that is interested in such a business anywhere in the Philippines contact David Poley at https://web.facebook.com/BoatClassified/

Tuna Time fishing boat has arrived in Cebu - available for charter

A new fishing boat has just arrived in Cebu. Fully equipped for fishing this boat will be located at the Cebu Yacht Club and is available for charter.

Very Traffic (beree trapik!)

Traffic is a big consideration when setting up any sort of office in the Philippines. Manila is already rated one of the worst cities in the world and I can tell you that Cebu is not far behind Manila.
If you plan to hire stuff you need to be in a location they can access via public transport. If you do need highly skilled staff then the province is an option. If you need more educated staff generally this means being in a major city or one of the Free Port Trade Zones.

How to Fix the Philippines traffic problems...
In addition to having one of the worst internet services in the world it also has some of the worst traffic congestion.

Manila is the worst.  People commuting to work can spend 3 or more hours each way.  An hour is considered nothing. Cebu is getting almost as bad.

Is there a solution to this traffic problem?

Here is my plan to fix the traffic problem.
50% improvement overnight – Filipinos start obeying the traffic laws
25% improvement – Now that Filipinos are obeying the rules they can now remove 90% of the no left – no right – no u-turn signs and unblock many of the blocked off access points.
10% improvement  – Enforce vehicle road worthiness.  Initially might take 50% of the cars of the road but over time it might be 15% to 25 %.  This improvement is more of a spin off from improved road safety.
We now have an 85% improvement in traffic congestion.
BUT We can keep going…
Further improvement would be achieved by implementing state of the art computerized traffic control, building some more by passes and express ways. Maybe a tunnel under the city with a rail….and remember to look up at the sky the day you see Filipinos all obeying the traffic laws because there will also be other strange phenomena such as pigs flying.

Corruption in the Philippines

We really do not need any translation to understand the basic meaning of this image. One point to make is that Filipinos understand the problem of corruption. The expression is universal.
So it only the degree and extent of corruption that shocks foreigners? I think its more the resignation and acceptance by the general population that bothers most of us. The fact that there often is no consequence or recourse even when fully exposed.

The Truth Cost of Living In The Philippines

Jay Stillman with a friend from Real Deal discuss and question the viability of claims of living in the Philippines for around $500. He does not say its impossible but says it would not be easy and questions why anyone from a first would country would want to move to a third world country like the Philippines and live like a local.
One of the main points he makes is about the security of living in the type of place you can rent for a few thousand pesos a month. Its a very casual chat very much like you might be sitting with them at a bar having a drink. Good basic advice especially regarding security of your possessions.
I would add that while there may be a greater risk of theft the more local you live, being in a more expensive place does not really guarantee you will not be robbed.

The Restobar Business

One of the most popular businesses started by many expats is a small bar and restaurant, usually targeting foreigners. The main focus is to provide a place for other foreigners to meet and hang out. Most of these types of establishments aim to provide simple and affordable western style foods. Sometimes providing food is very secondary to the business.

Send money to the Philippines

I had problems with Western Union refusing to deposit money more than once. Money laundering provisions I am told. Called them and end up talking to some idiot in India who asks the same question. What are the fund for. You tell them they are living expenses such as food, the IDIOT just repeats the question. AND talking about a few hundred dollars.
I use and recommend this service.
Cleared the next day related for bank transfers and deposits.

Not sure about the send money for collection service.

Thing is with orbit it can all be done online.

Disclosure - I do get a free transfer if others join up via this link.

Most consistent thing about the Philippines is its inconsistency.

Perhaps the most consistent thing about the Philippines is its inconsistency.
You can find highly talented people that provide an excellent service here; you can also find highly incompetent people that will waste your time, money and even worse...
The highly incompetent people will often present themselves as supremely confident and even reassuring. I believe that in many cases they really don’t know how incompetent they are.
Remember - price is not always an indication of the level of competence and expertise.
Over the years I have got a very good at identifying each. It’s often just a matter of asking the right questions and listening carefully to the responses.
